What if I want to totally darken my room during the day?

If you need to have your room totally darkened during various periods of the day, then you will want to request Black-Out Lining.  This lining will totally block out any light from coming through the window when the draperies are drawn shut.

What kind of lining should I use?

You will need to know the purpose that your lining is going to serve.  Ask yourself the following questions:

  • Do I want the room totally darkened out?
  • Do I want a nice inexpensive finish on the back of my window treatment?
  • Am I concerned with insulating from the heat and cold?
  • Or do I have an issue with moisture on my window and sill?

After deciding on these simple questions we can determine the lining that will best suite your needs and objectives.

Should I use a valance or cornice?
If you are wanting a ruffled outcome on the header of your window, then you will want to use valance.  A valance has a rod pocket sewn in so that a 1", 2", or 4" rod can be threaded through it.

On the other hand, if you want a smoother, more contemporary look, then it would be best to have your window header attached to a cornice box.  Some cornices even have a layer of quilt batting sewn in between the fabric and the lining in order to give it a little softer look.
